Obituary for Walter Andersen
Walter Thomas Andersen, a longtime Jersey Shore resident, passed away peacefully at the age of 97 on May 12th. He was a 1939 graduate of Manasquan High School lettering in football, basketball and baseball. In a distinctive honor, he was inducted into the Manasquan Hall of Fame in 2014 (All County and All State) and greatly enjoyed attending the event. He was also honored as a member of the 1940 Franklin & Marshall Football Hall of Fame. Walter served his country during World War II as a Marine officer and saw action in the Pacific where he was awarded the Distinguished Service Metal. He served in the Marine Corps Reserves until retiring in 1964 with the rank of Major. A graduate of Franklin & Marshall Preparatory School and Franklin & Marshall College, he completed his postgraduate degrees at Rutgers University and Seton Hall University. From 1946 to 1959 he was the Commandant of Peekskill Military Academy in Peekskill, NY and also coached football, basketball and baseball. Walter later enjoyed positions within the Wall Township Board of Education for thirty-two years as a teacher, guidance counselor, and Vice Principal of Wall Intermediate School retiring in 1990. Walter and his wife, Gretchen, owned and/or operated several local businesses notably the Circle Freeze, Sea Watch and the Rollerdrome. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church serving as a Sunday School teacher and on the Church Council.
He was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and John Andersen, his brothers, Raymond and Jack Andersen and his sister Evelyn Oskowski. Walter is survived by his loving wife, Gretchen (Mueller), his son Peter and daughters Gretchen Andersen Lepree and Kathleen (Lewis) Campanella, his grandchildren, Heather (Blair) Hinkle, Joseph Ryan (Rhianon) Lepree, Phillip and Jena Campanella and Ty Andersen. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Luke Hinkle and Reagan and Reese Lepree.
Arrangements are under the care of Orender Family Home for Funerals, Manasquan. Memorial donations may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 6 Osborn Avenue, Manasquan. At the request of the family, all arrangements are private.
