Obituary for Phyllis Nocerino (Gugliara)
Phyllis “Faye” (Gugliara) Nocerino, 83, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 19, 2018, surrounded by her beloved family. She was born April 14, 1934, in Aidone, Sicily to the late Lorenzo and Concetta (Prinzi) Gugliara. Her family’s journey began in February of 1946 by immigrating to the United States, sailing into Ellis Island, where her family’s name is memorialized. Her parents chose to raise their four children in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York.
In one of her happiest moments she wed the handsome decorated war hero Anthony Nocerino. They were happily married for 51 years. Seeking a more tranquil life for themselves and future children they moved to Somerset, New Jersey. They had four beautiful children Richard, Phyllis, Anthony, and Michelle. She took much pride in the fact that she and her husband, raised all four children to be college graduates. Faye, an accomplished seamstress, and a chef for Mayfair Supermarkets finally retired to Wall Township, New Jersey. She was a constant contributor to the lives of her adored children and grandchildren - Nikki Taylor Keefe, Samantha Lauren Keefe, Dean Gunnar Johnson, and Ayla Nocerino.
Phyllis was a member of St. Rose Church in Belmar, New Jersey. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, wine, Italian music, dancing, photography, art collecting, watching Hallmark, and spending time with her family.
She was pre-deceased by her husband Anthony Carmine Nocerino (2005), brothers Philip (1997) and Louie Gugliara (2014), and is survived by her sister Domenica “Mickey” Neilson, sons Rich and Anthony, daughters Phyllis and Michelle, son-in-laws William Keefe and Gary Johnson. Her grandchildren Nikki, Samantha, Dean, Ayla, and her much-loved nieces, nephews, and her best friend Barbara.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Thursday, February 22, 2018, from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm at Orender Family Home on 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 am on Friday, February 23, at St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake, NJ. Interment will follow at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or alz.org.
