Obituary for Lawrence G Chiaravallo

Lawrence G. Chiaravallo passed into eternal life on November 24, 2018 at the age of 93 surrounded by his family that he loved so much. He was born in Newark, NJ on August 11, 1925 to Antonio and Raffaela (nee Ceres) Chiaravallo. He attended St. Lucy’s Grammar School where he was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corp and graduated from Barringer High School in 1943. Larry met the the love of his life, Janet O’Hare, at a Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) dance, and they were married in 1948 at St Anne’s Church in Newark. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on October 3rd. Larry was an avid Yankee and NY Giant fan, and enjoyed traveling with his wife Janet to Ireland and Italy during the fall seasons. One of his greatest joys was relaxing at the beach in the summer with family and friends, and he came to be nicknamed the “mayor” of 20th Avenue beach in Belmar. He was employed by Merck Inc. for over thirty years as an Infectious Disease Control Sales Consultant and retired in 1995. Upon moving his family to Lake Como, NJ in 1969, he became involved in local affairs that began with serving as a councilman and then Mayor for eight years. He was captain of the Lake Como First Aid Squad, member of the Monmouth County Sewerage Authority, and member of the Shade Tree Committee. He belonged to the Old Guard and was a communicant and usher at St. Margaret’s Church in Spring Lake.
Although our dad’s physical presence has left this world, he will forever be in our hearts each and every day. His love for our mother, his children and grandchildren, his passion for opera, his life lessons taught and his unwavering conviction that there is good in all people will resonate with us always. And he never took for granted the opportunities afforded him in his personal and professional life and firmly believed in giving back to the community that served him so well. But his greatest act of giving was his unconditional love for family, and his support never faltered despite the circumstances. As he protected and watched over us in life, he will now forever be our guardian angel watching over us for eternity. His earthly light has dimmed, but the brightness of his spirit will help us endure his passing and give comfort during these difficult days. We will love you always Larry, dad and grandpa.
Surviving are his children Anthony Chiaravallo and his wife Deborah of Wall , daughter Jayne Balka and husband Larry of Wall , Laurence Chiaravallo and wife Elena of Cream Ridge, grandchildren Anthony A Chiaravallo and fiancée Tara Barnett of Wall , Kaitlin Watson and husband Jon of Baltimore MD, Jennifer Balka and fiancée Christopher Campbell of Hoboken NJ, Michael Chiaravallo of Cream Ridge NJ, sisters in law Patricia Formisano of Brick, Elizabeth O’Hare of Livingston and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Saturday December 1, 2018 from 10 am to 12 noon. A funeral service will be held 12:30 pm at St Anne Mausoleum, Wall Township, NJ.
