Obituary for Elsie Carey (Covey)

Elsie L. Carey, 96, of Brielle, NJ passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on December 24, 2018. Elsie was born in Lewes, DE and raised in Centerville, MD. After high school, she became a nurse, undertaking her training at Easton Hospital, MD. Thereafter, Elsie enlisted into the US Army and served during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. She celebrated her 21st birthday on the island of Iwo Jima. Elsie earned the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Meritorious Service Unit Plaque. Upon her honorable discharge, she returned to Wilmington, DE and worked at Delaware Hospital for many years and later as a visiting nurse in Bel Air, MD. Elsie was a communicant of St. Denis Church, Manasquan, NJ. She loved her daily two-mile walks which she did until age 93.

Elsie was predeceased by her parents William and Elsie Covey and her two brothers Gordon and William E. Covey. She is survived by her loving sister-in-law Marjorie M. Covey of Brielle, NJ. Elsie is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Christian Burial Mass at 10 am on Monday January 7, 2019 at St. Denis Church, Manasquan, NJ. Interment will follow at 12:30 pm at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wounded Warriors Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
