Howard Lewis, a decorated World War II veteran, died at age 96 on April 25, 2019 in Brick Town, NJ.
Howard was born on July 1, 1922 and grew up in Neptune, New Jersey. After graduating from Neptune High School, he joined the Army Air Corps on the outbreak of WWII. He flew 37 combat missions in Europe as a radio operator on a B24 bomber which he and his crewmates christened the “Glad Ta See Ya.” After Germany surrendered, Howard volunteered to fly military transport aircraft over the “Hump” from Burma to China. Howard’s combat medals include the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star and the Burma China India patch. After his discharge in 1945 Howard returned to the Jersey Shore where he married and had a daughter Karen.
Howard, a master carpenter, worked for Sterner’s Lumber Company for many years and designed and built five homes by himself. In 1970 he married Phyllis Huff Ford. After marrying, Howard and Phyllis lived in Spring Lake Heights, and then moved to Florida and Delaware for 29 years until returning to the Jersey Shore for their final years. They were married for 47 years until Phyllis died in 2018.
Howard is survived by 4 stepchildren: Gail Pyle, Lake Oswego, Oregon; Gary Ford, Point Pleasant Boro, NJ; Gerri Coyle, Brielle, NJ and Gay Ford, Manasquan, NJ; 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Howard was a good and decent man who will be remembered for his bravery, kindness and devotion to his wife Phyllis. Howard and Phyllis are together again, listening to Big Band music and foxtrotting into eternity.
Howard has been interred with his wife at St. Catherine’s Mausoleum. No service is planned. To send condolences to the family please visit Orender Family Home for funerals
