Obituary for Marilyn E Whelan

Marilyn Hayes Whelan, age 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 3, 2019 with her loving family by her side. Marilyn was born to Catherine and Joseph Hayes on June 20, 1936. Raised in Belleville and Nutley, she graduated as valedictorian of Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, Newark before working at Bell Telephone, Newark. On October 7, 1961, she married Joseph Whelan and began their lives together in Sparta and then Denville, NJ. A mother to eight, and grandmother to twenty-eight, Marilyn was neither short of patience nor good humor. Marilyn was the keeper of a full-life of wonderful stories, and in that set the ultimate example for all her children and those around her. Marilyn and Joe raised their family in Denville where their children attended St Mary’s School. She was actively involved in the church and school as room mother, working in the Bingo Hall, and as a member of the Rosary Society. She continued her role as a member of the St. Mary’s community as a part of the “Belles of St. Mary’s” lunch club. After moving to Point Pleasant, she became an active member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. Martha’s, where she was also a Eucharistic Minister. Marilyn also enjoyed a role with the garden club in Point Pleasant Borough, NJ. Above all, she took great and faithful joy in community with and service to others.
Marilyn was predeceased by her husband Joseph Whelan in 1997. Left to honor Marilyn is a large and loving family, to include her dear sister Kathleen (John) Egan; sister-in-law Mary Sisco (Richard); her eight loving children Joseph (Deborah) Whelan, Matthew (Kathy) Whelan, Christopher (Kimberly) Whelan, Timothy (Donna) Whelan, Kathy (Bob) Goldbeck, Pete (Ellen) Whelan, Maureen (Steve Dejacimo) and Dan (Stephanie) Whelan; and twenty-eight cherished grandchildren. Marilyn will be remembered by all as a steady-handed leader in all that she did, giving constantly of herself to others in need of her love and spirit.
