Obituary

Captain William Gerhardt Metting, 85 of Brielle passed away peacefully on March 17, 2021 at Bayshore Hospital in Holmdel, NJ. He was born in Long Branch, NJ November 3,1935. His parents were Marion and William G. Metting. William was a Sandy Hook Maritime Pilot serving the ports of New York and New Jersey for 46 years, retiring in 2005. As is the tradition of Sandy Hook Pilots he always boarded the ship to be piloted in a suit and tie. He took great pride in his career, the job was often challenging boarding ships day and night regardless of weather or the condition of the sea. William was a United States Army Veteran and he attended Monmouth College.

After his retirement he enjoyed spending time in Delray Beach FL golfing and sharing the company of fellow snowbirds. William also enjoyed travel and was able to visit countries throughout Europe as well as Asia, Africa, and Central America. His favorite trip was Bermuda, which was repeated most years, often in the company of friends and family. Bill enjoyed gardening, boating, and collecting. The Metting homes always had flowers and birds and various wildlife looking for a handout. Water was an integral part of his life and the waterfront homes were the favorite.

William is survived by his wife Karin Metting, also children William Metting and wife Coral, Denver CO, Robert Metting and Nina, Bound Brook NJ, Briana Shattuck and husband Steve, Fort Collins CO. Grandchildren are Porter Shattuck, Mason Shattuck. Ryan Metting, Jane Metting and Tyler Metting. William is survived by the mother of his children Bunny Daley. Also surviving are the children and grandchildren of his wife. Amy Patterson Sherwood, Pine Beach NJ and son Matthew Sherwood, Jessica and Robert Jelinsky Freehold NJ and their children Benjamin and Andrew. William is survived by his brothers Kenneth and Douglas Metting and their families.

George Tiedemann has been a good friend for many years, especially supportive during William’s illness. The family would like to thank Dr. Holly Abate and the Abate-Bersalona family for friendship and always being on call.

Arrangements are under the care of Orender Family Home for Funerals, Manasquan. A religious service will be private and conducted by Pastor Joseph TIedemann at Manasquan United Methodist Church with burial at Greenwood Cemetery. RIP Bill Metting, I met Bill years ago at the Atlantic Club (What's Your Raquet) and we shared many stories of our sea-going past adventures, great stories from his days as a pilot. Here's wishing you calm wind and a following sea on your final journey.

I was so sorry to hear of Bill's passing. I knew him as Tink, we were neighbors on Riverside Terrace for many years.
My son Steve and his boys were fast friends soon after moving in and it was a wonderful place to have them grow up.
He was a good neighbor and friend and will be missed. My condolences to his whole family.

We met Bill in 1997 when we were building our house several houses away from his beautiful sanctuary on the river. We were young and new to the neighborhood. He would walk his dog, and stop and chat with us. We found out thru many chats that he knew our great uncle, also a harbor pilot, and had stories to share about him. Bill was a sweet man, had such a gentle and kind nature and would always make us feel like old friends since the day we met. We'd bump into each other at a local thrift shop, both "treasure" hunting as we would call it. He would always have that great smile and leave me feeling so happy to have crossed paths. Rest peacefully, Bill.

It is with great sorrow that I lost my best friend of 35+ years on St. Patrick’s Day. Bill and I had similar work schedules that allowed us the flexibility to get together for many rounds of golf, breakfast at the Allenwood General Store, and countless, “Hey, I’ll meet you at McDonalds for coffee.” My hope is that there’s a McDonalds in heaven so we can continue our get-togethers over coffee. A truer friend no man could ever have!!! I love you Bill and cherish the times we spent together. Rest in peace, my good friend. George Tiedemann
