Captain William Gerhardt Metting, 85 of Brielle passed away peacefully on March 17, 2021 at Bayshore Hospital in Holmdel, NJ. He was born in Long Branch, NJ November 3,1935. His parents were Marion and William G. Metting. William was a Sandy Hook Maritime Pilot serving the ports of New York and New Jersey for 46 years, retiring in 2005. As is the tradition of Sandy Hook Pilots he always boarded the ship to be piloted in a suit and tie. He took great pride in his career, the job was often challenging boarding ships day and night regardless of weather or the condition of the sea. William was a United States Army Veteran and he attended Monmouth College.

William also enjoyed travel and was able to visit countries throughout Europe as well as Asia, Africa, and Central America. His favorite trip was Bermuda, which was repeated most years, often in the company of friends and family. Bill enjoyed gardening, boating, and collecting.
