In this photo, is a picture of Ernie with his first grandson Matt. Just as he loved all his typically developing grandchildren, Dad loved and accepted Matt from the start —his love was not contingent upon what he could accomplish. Most milestones for Matt have never been met. But Dad loved Matt anyway. In fact, until the day he passed he was the only person who could touch Matt’s face. Often, Matt would heave his crippled body onto the couch where Dad was sitting, take Dad’s hand, and put it on his face so Dad could rub his cheeks. That kind of love models the love of our Heavenly father as well. He loves us with an everlasting love that is not based on our performance but because we are His. (Jeremiah 31:3)
